Primary Teaching for Mastery

 

Mastering Number

at Reception and KS1 Work Group

 

This Work Group aims to secure firm foundations in additive relationships and the development of good number sense for all children from Reception through to Year 1 and Year 2

Mastering Number at Reception and KS1 -

Embedding the Impact Community 

 

For schools in who have already engaged in the Mastering Number at Reception and KS1 Work Group this online community will be there to help support reflection and thinking around the programme materials. It is open to all 2022/23 Mastering Number schools who are engaged in a 2023/24 Teaching for Mastery Work Group. (It is also open to schools who engaged in Mastering Number 2021/22 who have not previously engaged in this community.)

Mastering Number at KS2 Work Group

*NEW for 2023/24*

 

This Work Group enables pupils in Years 4 and 5 to develop fluency in multiplication and division facts, and a confidence and flexibility with number that exemplifies good number sense. It is for schools that have participated in a Mastering Number Work Group (at Reception and KS1), and are also in a Sustaining Work Group. (Junior Schools who are in a Sustaining Work Group may also apply)

Mastery Readiness Work Group

 

Support for primary schools that want to adopt teaching for mastery in maths, but would benefit from a staged approach.

Primary Teaching for Mastery

Development Work Group

 

Each Work Group will be led by one of the Maths Hub’s Mastery Specialists and involve six or seven primary schools. During the year, they will work closely together to introduce and develop approaches to teaching for mastery.

Primary Teaching for Mastery

Sustaining Work Group

 

The Primary Teaching for Mastery Sustaining Work Group is for all primary schools who have previously participated in a Primary Teaching for Mastery Work Group (TRG), or who are Mastery Specialist schools. It brings together schools that are working on continued development to sustain their teaching for mastery approach to mathematics.

SPECIALIST KNOWLEDGE FOR TEACHING MATHEMATICS PROGRAMMES

 

SKTM Early Years Teachers Programme

Number Patterns and Structures Pathway

 

 

This programme aims to help teachers in EYFS improve their mathematical subject knowledge alongside developing understanding of age-appropriate pedagogies suitable for Early Years settings. Sessions will have an emphasis on promoting children’s Early Number Sense (a key indicator of later mathematical success).

SKTM Early Years Teachers Programme

Pattern, Shape, Space and Measures Pathway

 

This programme aims to help teachers in EYFS improve their mathematical subject knowledge alongside developing understanding of age-appropriate pedagogies suitable for Early Years settings.

SKTM Primary Teachers Programme

Number Pathway 

 

Designed for teachers who would like to further develop their specialist knowledge for teaching maths, the programme is based on five core primary modules- Policy and impact on practice, number sense, additive reasoning, multiplicative reasoning and fractions.

SKTM Primary Teachers Programme

Spatial Reasoning Pathway 

 

Designed for teachers who would like to further develop their specialist knowledge for teaching maths. This programme will focus on- The importance of spatial reasoning within the mathematics curriculum, understanding the properties of shapes and developing geometric reasoning, enhancing opportunities for spatial reasoning and considering links between spatial reasoning and number/calculation.

SKTM Primary Early Career Teachers

Programme

 

This programme is designed to support primary early career teachers (in their first or second year of teaching). Participants will work deeply on one area of maths (number sense), drawing in the associated pedagogy, and activities will include lesson analysis and lesson design.

SKTM Primary Teaching Assistants Programme

 

This programme is designed to support teaching assistants (TAs) in developing specialist knowledge for teaching mathematics, thus enabling them to understand, teach and support pupils in maths in the classroom.

 PRIMARY AND SECONDARY WORK GROUP

 

Years 5-8 Continuity Work Group 

 

This Work Group aims to strengthen the transition from primary to secondary school by focusing on curriculum and pedagogical continuity over Years 5 to 8. Participants should be teachers of Years 5-8 in primary, secondary, middle school and all-through schools who have some responsibility for curriculum development

NCETM Professional Development Lead Programmes

 

Designed for those who lead professional development for teachers of maths.

NCETM School Development Lead Programme

 

For expert leaders of maths who are leading change in maths in a school or group of schools other than their own, and will benefit those who have previous experience of developing maths leadership capacity in schools/groups of schools or who are new to the role.
