Specialist Knowledge for Teaching Maths - Primary Early Career Teachers

This programme is designed to support primary early career teachers in developing specialist knowledge for teaching mathematics, thus enabling them to understand, teach and support pupils in maths in the classroom.

There are two phases: Phase 1 is for those identified as Early Career Teachers- teachers in their first or second year of teaching. Phase 2 is for those in the early part of their careers. They will have engaged with Phase 1 before engaging with this phase.

If you have previously participated in SKTM - Primary Early Career Teachers Phase 1 in 2022/23 and wish to continue into a second year please follow the link below for further information on Phase 2.

What is involved?

Participants will work deeply on one area of maths (number sense), drawing in the associated pedagogy, and activities will include lesson analysis and lesson design. The emphasis is on supporting ECTs with observing and reflecting on their own practice.

This porgramme will take place across the equivalent of four days.

What are the benefits?

Participants will:

  • enhance their maths subject knowledge with an emphasis on the key concepts, the representations and the language used to help pupils develop number sense
  • identify common misconceptions and ways of addressing these to help pupils master important concepts
  • review lessons/lesson sequences to identify how representations have been used to support the learning of the concept
  • observe learning to identify how children are approaching their maths and review the implications of these observations for their practice
  • review tasks set to ensure they support learners with developing their mathematical thinking strategies
  • work with their mentor to engage constructively with colleagues and mentors, sharing with them the professional leaning taking place within this programme

What are the expectations?

Participants and their schools must be able to commit to the full academic year’s programme.
