Early Years SKTM - Number Patterns and Structures

This Programme aims to help teachers in EYFS improve their mathematical subject knowledge alongside developing understanding of age-appropriate pedagogies suitable for Early Years settings. Sessions will have an emphasis on promoting children’s Early Number Sense (a key indicator of later mathematical success).

 

What's involved?

  • Four (full day) workshops, working with teachers from other schools
  • School-based development tasks and independent study to develop classroom practice
  • Regular, short reflection sessions
  • Completion of evaluations and post-workgroup reports

Aligned with the NCETM’s Early Years materials, this pathway will explore the development trajectories of three key areas of early mathematics development: Comparison, Cardinality and Composition alongside three associated pedagogical aspects.

What are the expectations?

Participants (supported by their schools) are expected to:

  • attend all the sessions
  • complete gap tasks in their schools and independent study between the sessions
  • keep a reflective log
  • contribute to online communities and the evaluation process

 

Who can apply?

This programme is available to practitioners in school’s who would like to develop their subject knowledge for teaching mathematics in the Early Years.

The programme may be suitable for the following:

  • Teachers and Teaching Assistants working in EYFS
  • Subject Leads wanting to learn more about mathematics in EYFS
  • Teachers working in SEND Settings. 

 

What is the cost?

The Early Years SKTM: Number Patterns and Structures programme is fully funded by the Maths Hubs Programme so is free to participating schools.

 

Where and when?

  • Welcome & Research Session for Participants & Maths Leads (online)- Wednesday 15th November 2023 - 3.30pm-5pm
  • Day 1 (face-to-face): Friday 24th November 2023, 9.30am-4pm at Broomfield Primary School, LE7 3ZQ
  • Day 2 (face-to-face): Friday 19th January 2024, 9.30am-4pm at Broomfield Primary School, LE7 3ZQ*
  • Day 3 (face-to-face): Friday 19th April 2024, 9.30am-4pm at Wreake Valley Academy (Trust Offices), ​LE7 1LY
  • Day 4 (face-to-face): Wednesday 22nd May 2024 1.30pm - 4pm (Participants & Maths Leads) at Wreake Valley Academy (Trust Offices), ​LE7 1LY
*Venue changed from Wreake Valley Academy (Trust offices) to Broomfield Primary School for Day 3.

 

In addition there will be an online reflection session held after Day 1, Day 2 and Day 3. The dates of these will be organised by the programme lead with participants.
