Early Years SKTM - Pattern, Shape, Space and Measures

This Programme aims to help teachers in EYFS improve their mathematical subject knowledge alongside developing understanding of age-appropriate pedagogies suitable for Early Years settings. Sessions will have an emphasis on promoting areas of the Early Years mathematics Educational Programme that are important for later mathematical achievement.

Why Make 'Space' for Spatial Reasoning?

In December 2023, one of our Programme Leads, Vicki Giffard, held an online taster session for the SKTM Early Years - Pattern, Shape, Space and Measures Pathway and SKTM Primary Teachers- Spatial Reasoning Pathway. During this online session, Vicki shared more about what is meant by Spatial Reasoning (and why it doesn't just mean geometry). She discussed why Spatial Reasoning is important - for daily life, Mathematics and the wider curriculum - and that research shows there is a positive correlation between spatial ability and mathematical ability - but often there is not a significant focus on Spatial Reasoning in the Mathematics curriculum. You can watch a recording of the session by following the link below

What is involved?

  • Four (full day) workshops, working with teachers from other schools.
  • School-based development tasks and independent study to develop classroom practice.
  • Regular, short reflection sessions
  • Completion of evaluations and post-Work Group reports.

Aligned with the NCETM’s Early Years materials, this pathway will explore the development trajectories of three key areas of early mathematics development: Pattern, Spatial Reasoning and Measure alongside three associated pedagogical aspects.

What are the benefits?

  • You will enhance your early mathematics subject knowledge
  • You will review and enhance the mathematical learning opportunities and
    pedagogical approaches across your provision

and

  • Your pupils will to communicate their mathematical thinking and foster an enjoyment and understanding of mathematics

What are the expectations?

Participants (supported by their schools) are expected to:

  • attend all the sessions
  • complete gap tasks in their schools and independent study between the sessions
  • keep a reflective log
  • contribute to online communities and the evaluation process

Who can apply?

This programme is available to practitioners in school’s who would like to develop their
subject knowledge for teaching mathematics in the Early Years.

The programme may be suitable for the following:

  • Teachers and Teaching Assistants working in EYFS
  • Subject Leads wanting to learn more about mathematics in EYFS
  • Teachers working in SEND Settings.

What is the cost?

The Early Years SKTM: Pattern, Shape, Space and Measures programme is fully funded by the Maths Hubs Programme so is free to participating schools.

Where and When?
