Developing A Level Pedagogy Work Group

This Work Group supports experienced A level teachers to not only further develop their expertise but provide a model to support departmental change. The content of individual Work Groups will be flexible to meet the needs of participants, but will be broadly linked to the Overarching Themes of the A level qualification: problem solving and mathematical thinking; mathematical modelling and representations; proof, reasoning and mathematical communication.

The Work Group involves a direct working partnership between the Maths Hubs Network and the Advanced Mathematics Support Programme (AMSP).

What is involved?

This Work Group explores and deepens participants' pedagogic content knowledge, empowering teachers to enhance their classroom practice and to influence department-wide A level teaching. It is an engine for improving student understanding of A level Maths, and driving their subsequent success. Participants will design and trial classroom activities, sharing and reflecting on their experiences with others in the Work Group.

This year the Work Group is going to be focused around 'Developing Mechanics Pedagogy'. It will focus on all areas of teaching mechanics, it will look at developing expertise in the teaching of mechanics as well as developing subject pedagogical knowledge for mechanics.

Who can apply?

Participants will be established teachers of A level Maths who are looking to deepen their pedagogical understanding. They must be teaching a current A level Maths group.

This Work Group would be particularly useful for those who may have already completed other A level subject knowledge and pedagogy CPD.

Benefits

  • Your students will have a deeper conceptual understanding of the A level Maths content
  • You will understand the purpose of the Overarching Themes, including use of technology, and their impact on teaching and learning in A level Maths
  • You and your department will be equipped to better support the development of stronger subject knowledge pedagogy
  • You and your department will further embed the Overarching Themes into your A level

WHAT ARE THE EXPECTATIONS?

Participants’ institutions must commit to:

  • releasing them to attend all Work Group sessions
  • allowing them to develop their practice in their classroom and share this with department colleagues.

Participants must commit to:

  • attending all Work Group sessions and engaging with and completing activities between Work Group sessions

The wider context

There is a range of currently available maths teacher professional development around subject knowledge and pedagogy for new teachers of A level Maths via the Advanced Mathematics Support Programme (AMSP), but little extended professional development for experienced teachers or leaders of A level Maths teaching. These Work Groups seek to fill this gap and support experienced A level teachers to not only further develop their expertise but provide a model to support departmental change.

The aim of these Work Groups is to support the teaching of A level Maths, with a focus on pedagogical content knowledge in order to enhance and deepen student understanding of the course and its Overarching Themes.

What is the cost?

The Developing A Level Pedagogy Work Group is fully funded by the Maths Hubs Programme and the AMSP so is free to participating schools/colleges.
