Mastering Number - Embedding the Impact Communities

For schools in 2021-22 Mastering Number Programme – Cohort 1 – there is an opportunity to join an Embedding the Impact Community where schools will continue to work with the Maths Hub on Embedding the Impact as you move into using the Mastering Number materials in 2022/23. To be eligible to join the community the school must be involved in the Teaching for Mastery programme in a Developing, Embedding or Sustaining Work Group in 2022/23.

What is involved?

The Mastering Number Embedding the Impact Community will be an online Work Group (with optional online meetings) and will be there to help support reflection and thinking around the programme materials.

Participating schools will need to nominate one person to be part of the community; this person will be the nominated Mastering Number Lead for the school. It may be the subject leader or a teacher from KS1 who will work with the subject leader to keep the programme moving forward, and support key understanding of the Mastering Number themes within your school. Schools will be able to continue to gain access to the materials as they have this year and it will be possible to revisit training videos and recordings of Live Sessions. Don’t worry if you have new teachers in Reception, Year 1 or Year 2 they will be able to register to access the materials. (Please scroll to the bottom of this page to see how to add a new teacher)

The video below is a summary of the Mastering Number programme. It provides an overview of the materials and captures aspects of the impact on pupils and staff who took part in the 21-22 Mastering Number Programme.

What are the benefits?

Participating in the Work Group will provide the following benefits to participant schools:

  • pupils will be able to clearly communicate their mathematical ideas
  • teachers will develop a secure understanding of how to build firm mathematical foundations
  • teachers will work to develop intentional teaching strategies focused on developing fluency in calculation and number sense for all children
  • teachers will develop understanding and use of appropriate manipulatives to support your teaching of mathematical structures

What are the expectations?

Schools chosen to participate commit to the following expectations:

  • The school is participating in a 2022/23 Teaching for Mastery Work Group
  • The school will continue Mastering Number in all Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 classes (as an addition to their daily maths lesson in Year 1 and Year 2)
  • The Mastering Number Lead nominated by the school will be expected to contribute to local online Community activity, led by the Community Lead, reflecting on the implementation and impact of the programme, and sharing practice and challenges as they revisit themes from NCP21-07
